Alcaraz had entered the tournament having won Wimbledon and the French Open earlier this season.

He recently suffered a defeat to Novak Djokovic in the gold medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Thursday night marked the first time Alcaraz has been ousted from a major tournament in the second round since 2021, when he was eliminated at Wimbledon by Daniil Medvedev.

The second-round match meanwhile represented the highest-ranked victory of van de Zandschulp’s career.

The 28-year-old Dutch professional made it as far as the quarterfinals during the 2021 U.S. Open. Van de Zandschulp is now set to face Jack Draper on Saturday as the 2024 edition of the tournament continues into the third round.
